The historic birthplace of Juneteenth is preparing to raise the roof with soul, spirit, and celebration as the NIA Cultural Center proudly presents the Emancipation Gospel Celebration Concert.

Taking place on Sunday, June 8, 2025, at 4:00 PM at the iconic 1894 Grand Opera House in Galveston, this momentous event commemorates the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth with a powerhouse gospel lineup led by the legendary Pastor Shirley Caesar, the electrifying Walls Group, and the dynamic Houston Mass Choir.

Tickets are available now, and this is one event that promises to be both soul-stirring and history-making.

In an exclusive interview, Sue Johnson, Executive Director of the NIA Cultural Center, shares the vision behind the concert, the importance of commemorating Juneteenth, and how gospel music continues to carry the spirit of freedom forward.

Q: Sue, tell us what inspired the Emancipation Gospel Celebration Concert and why it’s such an important event this year.

Sue Johnson: This year’s concert is especially meaningful because we are celebrating the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth, right here in the city where freedom was finally proclaimed in 1865. For us at the NIA Cultural Center, this isn’t just a historic milestone — it’s a spiritual one. We wanted to honor the legacy of our ancestors and the continued journey toward liberation. Gospel music is the heartbeat of our history — it speaks to our struggles, our victories, and our deep faith. This concert is our love letter to the community and our tribute to freedom.

Q: The lineup is phenomenal. How did you select Pastor Shirley Caesar and The Walls Group to lead this celebration?

Sue Johnson: We were very intentional. Pastor Shirley Caesar is the queen of gospel — a living legend whose voice and presence have blessed generations. Having her in Galveston is monumental. We also wanted to highlight the next generation, which is where The Walls Group comes in. They’re vibrant, contemporary, and incredibly anointed. Together, they form a beautiful bridge between legacy and the future. Their combined presence will uplift every soul in that room.

Q: What role will the Houston Mass Choir play in this event?

Sue Johnson: The Houston Mass Choir will open the concert, and they are going to set the spiritual tone in a mighty way. Their sound is powerful and their energy is infectious. They’ve graced some of the biggest gospel stages and their ministry is deeply rooted in excellence. They’re not just performing — they’re leading us into a worship experience that prepares the atmosphere for everything to come.

Q: Tell us more about the “Champions of Freedom Award” and who it’s meant to honor.

Sue Johnson: The Champions of Freedom Award is one of the most heartfelt moments of the evening. It honors individuals who have made significant contributions to justice, education, cultural preservation, and community empowerment. These are people who continue the work that began 160 years ago — building equity, uplifting others, and advancing the cause of freedom in their own unique ways. It’s our way of recognizing the torchbearers among us who remind us that Juneteenth is not just history — it’s a living movement.

Q: How do proceeds from this event support the mission of the NIA Cultural Center?

Sue Johnson: Every dollar raised from this event goes directly into our programs at the NIA Cultural Center. That includes youth enrichment, educational exhibits, cultural preservation, and year-round community outreach. Our mission is to educate, uplift, and empower — and this concert is one of the many ways we do that. When people attend, they’re not only enjoying an unforgettable concert — they’re investing in our future and honoring our past.

With tickets starting at just $35, the Emancipation Gospel Celebration Concert is more than just a concert — it’s a spiritual revival, a cultural tribute, and a call to unity.

As gospel royalty and community heroes take the stage in Galveston, the birthplace of Juneteenth, the night promises inspiration, reflection, and celebration. “This is not just a concert,” says Sue Johnson. “It’s a celebration of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.”
