Dr. Tara S. Merchant, esteemed legal professional, journalist, thought leader, and humanitarian, has been officially appointed and will be sworn in as United States District Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY).
Her permanent appointment will take effect on March 6, 2026, at the federal courthouse located at 225 Cadman Plaza, Brooklyn, NY 11201.

Dr. Merchant earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from Strayer University and her Juris Doctor from Florida A&M University College of Law, demonstrating a strong foundation in both business and legal scholarship.
She is a proud member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honors Society, recognized for outstanding scholarly achievement, and serves as a Board of Trustees member and nominator for Upper Room Theological University, where her leadership helps shape future generations grounded in ethics, scholarship, and purpose.
