As we approach the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth, it’s important to recognize how far we’ve come and the role our communities play in keeping history alive.
In Galveston, Texas, the birthplace of Juneteenth, the NIA Cultural Center has long celebrated freedom, faith, and cultural heritage through music, education, and community engagement.
At the NIA Cultural Center, we believe that remembering this history is not just about reflection, it is about celebration, empowerment, and community.

This year, we are thrilled to present the 5th Annual Emancipation Gospel Celebration Concert, headlined by gospel powerhouses Karen Clark Sheard and Byron Cage, on Sunday, June 14, at the historic Grand 1894 Opera House.
Their voices have inspired millions, transcending genres and generations, and we are proud that they will bring their extraordinary talent to Galveston, a city deeply intertwined with the story of Juneteenth.
Gospel music has always been a source of hope, resilience, and unity, qualities that resonate deeply with the spirit of Juneteenth. Karen Clark Sheard, with her iconic multi-octave range and dynamic ministry, and
Byron Cage, whose anthems of praise have uplifted countless hearts, embody the power of music to inspire change and community connection.
Together, they will offer an afternoon of celebration that honors freedom, faith, and perseverance.
The concert will also spotlight emerging talent through The Brown Four, a gifted sibling group whose youthful energy and harmonies reflect the promise of the next generation carrying forward a legacy of faith and cultural pride.
In addition, we will present the “Champions of Freedom Award” to individuals who have made meaningful contributions to our community and the preservation of history, a tradition that reminds us that freedom is both a birthright and a responsibility.
The NIA Cultural Center exists to empower and uplift our community through arts, culture, and education.
Juneteenth is a perfect reflection of our mission: to celebrate heritage, inspire dialogue, and cultivate opportunities for learning and growth.
By attending this concert, the community not only enjoys world-class gospel music but also supports the Center’s ongoing work to preserve and elevate the rich cultural tapestry of Galveston.
We invite everyone to join us for this remarkable celebration of faith, freedom, and community.
Together, we honor our past, celebrate our present, and inspire a brighter future.
