This Juneteenth, travelers are gearing up to make their way to Galveston, Texas, for the 5th Annual Emancipation Gospel Celebration Concert at the NIA Cultural Center, an event that has quickly become one of the most talked-about celebrations of Black heritage in the nation. On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the historic 1894 Grand Opera House will come alive from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, honoring freedom, faith, and the enduring legacy of Black culture through an unforgettable evening of gospel music.

Under the visionary leadership of Sue Johnson, Executive Director of the NIA Cultural Center, the organization has become a cornerstone of African American heritage in Galveston.
Through music, art, education, and community engagement, the Center preserves and elevates Black history while creating experiences that inspire, empower, and unite generations. Its annual Juneteenth celebration draws people from all over Texas and beyond, eager to witness world-class gospel performances and celebrate Black heritage in the birthplace of Juneteenth.
This year’s celebration features a powerhouse gospel lineup that promises to captivate audiences. Four-time GRAMMY® winner Karen Clark Sheard, legendary member of the Clark Sisters, headlines with her extraordinary multi-octave vocals that have inspired artists across genres. Byron Cage, award-winning gospel icon and the “Prince of Praise,” brings his signature contemporary worship anthems that have become favorites in churches nationwide.
Opening the concert will be The Brown Four, a talented sibling group from Memphis, Tennessee, whose passion for music began at home, in church, and on local playgrounds, delivering energy, harmony, and heart that resonates with audiences of all ages.
In addition to the performances, the NIA Cultural Center will honor community leaders with the “Champions of Freedom Award,” recognizing individuals whose contributions continue to uplift Galveston and the surrounding region. Sue Johnson shared, “Juneteenth is a time to honor our history, culture, and freedom. This celebration brings together extraordinary gospel artists and community heroes to inspire, uplift, and empower everyone who attends.”

Alex Thomas, spokesperson for the NIA Cultural Center, added, “Sue Johnson’s leadership ensures that Galveston remains a hub for celebrating heritage. Music, culture, and community converge in a way that is inspiring, unforgettable, and deeply meaningful. This is a Juneteenth celebration that people come from everywhere to experience, and it is truly one everyone is talking about.”
