Danton Whitley Sr. Talks MANTRAS, Faith, Purpose, Love and the Power of Speaking Life

Danton Whitley Sr. has entered a powerful new chapter with the release of his highly anticipated EP, MANTRAS.

Blending gospel, R&B, soul and urban influences, the 10-track project reflects his journey of faith, personal growth, transformation and purpose.

In this exclusive interview, Danton opens up about the inspiration behind MANTRAS, the meaning of his “New Nostalgia” sound, his relationship with his wife Felicia, and why he believes the words we speak can help shape the lives we live.

Q: Danton, congratulations on the release of MANTRAS. When you look at the entire EP, what part of your personal journey do you feel you were finally able to put into words and music?

Danton Whitley Sr.: MANTRAS is really the soundtrack to my life journey. It brings together faith, reflection, affirmation and real life. I wanted to create something that represented where I am spiritually and personally while also giving people music that feels good. The project reflects my continued growth and the different things I’ve learned about faith, purpose, confidence and becoming who God has called me to be.

Q: The title MANTRAS immediately suggests the power of words. What does the word “mantra” mean to you personally?

Danton Whitley Sr.: To me, MANTRAS represents the words and affirmations we speak over ourselves. There is power in what we say and what we believe. I wanted the project to remind people that we have to be intentional about the things we speak into our own lives. Sometimes you have to speak life over yourself even before you can see the manifestation of what you’re believing for.

Q: Was there a particular season in your life that inspired you to create this project?

Danton Whitley Sr.: This project comes from my overall journey of faith, reflection and personal transformation. It’s about becoming, growing and learning to believe again. There are moments in life when you have to step back, reflect on where you’ve been, recognize where you are, and trust God with where you’re going. MANTRAS captures that journey for me.

Q: Why do you believe the words we speak about ourselves have so much power?

Danton Whitley Sr.: Because our words can influence the way we think, the way we see ourselves and ultimately the way we move through life. If we’re constantly speaking negativity over ourselves, it can become difficult to see beyond that. But when we choose to speak life, hope, faith and purpose, we’re reminding ourselves of what God has already spoken over us. That doesn’t mean challenges disappear. It means we choose not to let those challenges define us.

Q: Your single “New” is especially personal. You’ve shared that God revealed His love to you through your relationship with your wife, Felicia. How did that realization change your perspective?

Danton Whitley Sr.: God revealed His love to me through my wife, Felicia. Through that love, He opened my eyes to who He is, who I am and the purpose He has for my life. That was a powerful realization for me. It helped me understand that God’s love can show up in ways that we may not initially recognize. It truly made me see my life from a renewed perspective.

Q: There is a powerful lyric in “New”: “You bring out the best in me. You made me new and showed me purpose.” What do those words mean to you?

Danton Whitley Sr.: When I say, “You bring out the best in me, you made me new and showed me purpose,” I’m talking about God. God is the one who made me new. He revealed His love to me through Felicia, and through that experience, He helped me understand myself and my purpose in a deeper way. It’s really a testimony about spiritual renewal.

Q: You describe your sound as “New Nostalgia.” What does that mean?

Danton Whitley Sr.: “New Nostalgia” is music that carries pieces of what feels familiar and soulful, rooted in the music we grew up loving, but I’ve reimagined those influences through a fresh and progressive lens. It feels like something you remember and something you’ve never heard at the same time. I wanted to honor the music that shaped me while still creating something contemporary and uniquely mine.

Q: MANTRAS moves through gospel, R&B, soul and urban sounds. Was it important for you not to put the project into one musical box?

Danton Whitley Sr.: Absolutely. Music is bigger than one category for me. My experiences, influences and faith all come together naturally in the music. MANTRAS allows me to explore different sounds while keeping the message at the center. Whether it’s gospel, R&B, soul or urban music, I want the music to connect with people.

Q: Who did you have in mind when you were creating MANTRAS?

Danton Whitley Sr.: I really wanted the project to become personal for everyone who hears it. My hope is that people don’t just listen to these songs, but find words in them that they can carry into their own journey. Someone may hear a song and find encouragement. Someone else may hear something that speaks directly to where they are in life. That’s what makes music powerful.

Q: The project is about faith, confidence, growth and purpose. Which of those themes has been the biggest lesson for you?

Danton Whitley Sr.: Purpose has been a major part of my journey because understanding purpose changes the way you see your life. When you begin to understand that God has a purpose for you, you start looking at your experiences differently. Even the difficult moments can become part of your growth. For me, it’s about continuing to become the person God has called me to be.

Q: What would you say to someone who feels lost or uncertain about their purpose?

Danton Whitley Sr.: I would tell them to keep believing and don’t give up on themselves. Sometimes we want to know the entire plan, but faith doesn’t always work that way. You have to trust God with the next step. Speak life over yourself, surround yourself with what encourages you, and remain open to what God is showing you. Your current situation does not necessarily determine where you’re going.

Q: Was there ever a point when you had to learn how to believe in yourself again?

Danton Whitley Sr.: I think believing again is something we all experience throughout life. That’s part of what MANTRAS represents. Life can challenge your confidence, your faith and your perspective. But you have to remind yourself of who you are and whose you are. You have to learn to agree with what God has already spoken over your life.

Q: How have your roles as a husband and artist influenced the man and musician you are today?

Danton Whitley Sr.: Those experiences have definitely shaped me. My relationship with Felicia has been an important part of my understanding of love and God’s purpose in my life. Being an artist also gives me a platform to share what I’ve learned. I don’t want to just make music. I want to create music that means something and gives people something they can carry with them.

Q: You describe MANTRAS as a project about becoming, growing and believing again. What are you still becoming?

Danton Whitley Sr.: I’m still becoming everything God has called me to be. I don’t believe we ever stop growing. There are always new lessons, new levels of understanding and new opportunities to become better. I’m continuing to grow as a man, as a husband, as an artist and as a person of faith.

Q: What do you hope listeners take away from MANTRAS after they finish listening?

Danton Whitley Sr.: I hope they walk away encouraged. I hope they reflect on where they’ve been, embrace where they are and believe in where they’re going. Most importantly, I want people to understand that their words matter. What we speak matters. What we believe matters. Sometimes becoming who God has called us to be begins with learning to speak life over ourselves.

Q: If someone is going through a difficult season right now and could only hear one song from MANTRAS, which song would you tell them to listen to first?

Danton Whitley Sr.: I would start with “New” because it represents the heart of the project for me. It’s about God’s love, transformation and purpose. It’s a reminder that you can be renewed, that God can bring out the best in you, and that there is purpose in your life even when you may not see the entire picture.

Q: What is the mantra Danton Whitley Sr. is speaking over his own life right now?

Danton Whitley Sr.: Become. Grow. Believe again. Speak life. Those words really capture where I am. I’m continuing to become, continuing to grow, continuing to believe and continuing to speak life over myself and the people around me.

Q: Finally, as you enter this new chapter with MANTRAS, what do you believe God is preparing you for next?

Danton Whitley Sr.: I believe God is continuing to open doors for me to share this music and this message with more people. MANTRAS is bigger than just an EP. It’s a reflection of my journey and an opportunity to encourage others through what I’ve experienced. I’m excited about what comes next, but I’m also focused on being present and allowing God to lead the journey.

Q: If you could sit down with the Danton Whitley Sr. who first began this journey and tell him one thing that you know now that you didn’t know then, what would you say?

Danton Whitley Sr.: I would tell him to trust the process and trust God. You don’t have to have everything figured out. Keep believing, keep growing and keep moving forward. The journey is part of the purpose. Sometimes you don’t understand what God is doing while you’re going through it, but later you realize that every experience was helping prepare you for who you were becoming.
